A breath of fresh air

I have always been intrigued by curious and anomalous menus and one look at Culture Cuisine’s menu was enough for me to say yes to review them. Culture Cuisine is a home delivery outlet, run by Gurgaon Foodie Michael Khanna, boasting of some region specific dishes not easily found in Gurgaon and some lost recipes which were perfected by our elders in more relaxed times, years, maybe even decades ago.

Going by my instincts I ordered a variety of mostly unique dishes one Saturday afternoon and what followed was an epic afternoon indeed, filled with some really interesting and unique flavours. I started with Prawn Chili Fry, the prawns nice and moist, the bite intact, and it was a delight. The nigella seeds added another dimension to the dish, which I noticed in this dish for the first time.

The Gurda Kapoora Kaleji is a dish not found very commonly in Gurgaon, because of people's reluctance to eat offal, but trust me if as a meat eater you haven’t had this, you haven’t eaten anything yet. This dish was (surprisingly) not oily at all and the masala was sweet and spicy at the same time. The gurda was a tad harder than I’ve usually had, but I can’t comment if that was the meat’s fault or the chef’s.

Grandpa’s pulao was again a delight. The meat was well cooked, the rice was very flavourful. The dish had a greenish tint to it because of some secret herbs used in the rice, which probably only grandpa knows about. The portion was huge, but the proportion of meat to rice was little, so a few more pieces of meat would be a great addition to this almost perfect dish.

The Railway Mutton Curry, a dish which always arouses curious questions and heated debates from the old timers about its origin and authenticity, was beautiful. Mutton and potato pieces cooked in a no nonsense, comforting curry, good to be eaten with roti or rice. Highly recommended. To round up, I had the bread pudding which was amazing. The chopped figs in it added to this already delightful, not too sweet dish. For some reason this dish reminded me of Anglo Indian households of yore.

None of the food was overly oily, or was overly spiced. If these few dishes are any indication of the other items on the menu, this joint is like a breath of fresh air in the oil and masala laden food that we find almost everywhere in the city.

Highly recommended!!
