Café Khyber is the relatively new restaurant that has been getting good reviews in Vadodara these days. Since there weren’t many street food options available for lunch here, I go there with my colleagues, but with trepidations some below average butter chicken kind of food, but perk up a bit when I noticed Saoji mutton on the menu.

The first starter to arrive is veg Manchurian “bolls” (Rs 115) which the vegetarians enjoy. Then the carnivorous dishes start arriving. Fish Tikka (Rs 250) is without hesitation the best one I have had to date. Perfectly cooked with the right spice level and seasoning, it is flaky surmai at its best.

Same delight is repeated with Fish Hariyali Tikka (Rs 250). I really am a happy man.

Saoji mutton (Rs 280) has a dryish gravy, and is a robust dish. It is rustic with chunky masalas and spices, with perfectly cooked meat. Again really enjoyable. I have this with roomali roti (Rs 45) which lacks the bit of elasticity that makes it so enjoyable. The vegetarians have Paneer Bhuna Masala (Rs 170) which they finish with obvious enjoyment.

When in Vadodara, I can recommend its place first and foremost for its fish tikkas.
