Shivendu and I decide to get to the bottom of the hype that is surrounding Yum Yum Cha and met here for lunch. After a long wait we get our table for two. The restaurant is bursting at its seams with diners, and the service staff, it is obvious to see, is overworked.
I do not like the food much. Now I have been told by many people that I am too finicky with my food and when I don’t like the food of a restaurant I can be harsh. Here I promise to be absolutely objective, and will also give Shivendu’s perspective (he says he is easy to please) to balance out mine.
We start with Cantonese classic dimsum Prawn Cheung Fung (Rs 285), which Shivendu finds pleasant and I agree with him, though I prefer the sleeker, lighter ones Royal China makes with whole prawns (the ones here are chopped). Both of us feel that the skin of the Prawn Hargao Dimsum (Rs 285) is too thick. Hargao is supposed to be a transparent while this one is not. It is a disappointing dish.

Since I prefer Sashimi to Sushi, I take Shivendu’s opinion on Dynamite Sushi (Rs 585) which has salmon, spicy mayo and prawn tempura inside and is topped with tempura crumbs. As per him, the tempura crumbs ruin the sushi because of which one can’t taste anything. Even after dusting out the crumbs, the sushi is at best average.

Next we taste two of their noodle soups. First is Vietnam’s national dish, Pho. Though for someone like Shivendu who has never tasted this dish before, it is pleasant, for me it is nowhere close to the original. I can understand that they cannot serve the classic beef brisket here but there are other options in red meats but they have only the option of prawn or veg and so we order Prawn Pho (Rs 485). The broth which is the heart of this soup is not clear as it should be but is cloudy. There is no detectable taste of meat, star anise or cinnamon and other things that make this broth and this dish so popular. And the noodles are not the light rice noodles but the heavier wheat noodles.

Seafood Kimchi Soup (Rs 585) is an unmitigated disaster. It is completely lacking balance. Both of us find the soup too sweet, thereby masking whatever taste it might have. Calamari is the only obvious seafood that we can find in the dish.

As we are busy shelling out for the bill, I ask Shivendu “paisa vasool”? our response to this question is “Naaahhhhh…..”
