Amongst the very few Bengali cuisine joints in Gurgaon is Sonar Bangla who have recently shut their outlet at Galleria Market – Phase 4, and moved to Sector 56 HUDA market.

The menu is extensive with Bengali dishes covering only half the list, with other regional dishes making up for a not so exclusive Bengali restaurant. In snacks, the Veg Chop is deep fried with a mashed filling of beetroot, carrots, beans, potato & cashews. A bit too soggy within.

Devil Eggs is coated with soft mashed potatoes, with small chicken chunks and a strong garam masala flavor. Not to exciting on the burst of flavors. The Chicken Chop too is deep-fried, large pieces with bread coating and a soft filling of chicken, onion, chilies & ginger/garlic batter. Taste is fairly good, and goes well with their tomato chutney cooked in sweet, sour, spicy flavors.

The Aloo Posto with Gourd is slightly runny and mashed. A very mild flavor of mustard and poppy, and low on salt. Being one of the classic Bengali dishes, it is a let down. The Kosha Murgi is a thick tangy gravy with sliced tomato’s & onions and a strong flavor of khada garam masala. Spices blended well.

Veg Sukto is assortment of vegetables like Brinjals, drumsticks, potatoes tempered with fennel seed & spices with a sweetish flavor. Average at best. The Bekti Spicy Fish Bhappa is amongst the better dishes, for those who enjoy sharpness of raw mustard. Fish is well steamed. Served in thick mustard & chili gravy. 

Luchi with Dum Aloo is another good combination. Luchi is deep fried puffy and soft. Dum aloo has baby potatoes with thick masala. Right flavors of garlic and ginger.

Veg Biryani with Potatoes is well made, but for the paneer pieces in it. Unlike the typical Biryani’s made in spices, this is more a Palao. Made in Ghee with beans, carrots, potatoes, paneer and coconut flavor. The Sandesh is passable.  

The food overall is average.
