Ahmednagar is a city in central Maharashtra with lots of historic antecedents. It takes its name from Ahmad Nizam Shah I, who founded the town in 1494 on the site of a battlefield after which he established a new sultanate in Ahmednagar, also known as Nizam Shahi dynasty. Later on, during his confinement by the British at Ahmednagar Fort in 1944, Jawaharlal Nehru wrote the famous book The Discovery of India.

So I land up here expecting a historic city with lots to see, but what I get is a dusty small town with no redeeming features…..except one. Rasrang Misal. Over the past five decades Rasrang Misal has had a lot of fans, and has grown now from a hand cart operation to a restaurant with a colourful board in the commercial underbelly of the town.

As expected, one has to wait for one’s turn and then share tables with others. But it just took five minutes for us to get our table. For 40 rupees, first a bowl of boiled sprouts with farsaan, onions, coriander leaves and chopped green chillies land up on our table. Soon thereafter, the rassa (gravy) is poured in. There is an extra stage for those like me who like their missal to pack a punch, when a second deep red gravy with nuke power gets added when I request for more “tikha”. The end result is food nirvana.
