Amaravathi is a typical small town hotel and restaurant in Southern India. They are dark, dingy, and full of diners attacking their biryanis with impressive vigour. The other popular option is the rice laden meals (thali) providing economical meals. I have been told their mutton dishes and pulusu are good, so I decide to try them.
I have a false start with their Mutton Fry (Rs 210) which is so tough, it is inedible. Special Bommidalu Fish Pulusu (Rs 350), a dish that comes strongly recommended by the gentleman taking the order also disappoints, because this local fish is small and bony and and the pulusu lacks the colour and zing.

Drumstick Mutton Curry (Rs 220) is where things start looking up. It is what I have been looking for. Nice piquant curry with a creamy touch of coconut and well cooked with drumsticks adding the sweetish touch to the dish. Prawn Curry (Rs 205) is impressive too, with prawns that have been cooked just right. I have these with Tawa Chapati (Rs 6).

One of my veg colleagues orders South Indian Thali (Rs 100) and is quite satisfied with it.

After having had Andhra food at Bangalore, Hyderabad, Vijaywada, and now Vizag, I can say for sure that Bangalore serves the best Andhra food in the country.
