Very rarely a restaurant impresses so much that it makes a reviewer’s job really easy, because he can then praise it whole heartedly. I had this experience at Hahn’s Kitchen, a Korean restaurant recently opened at the brand new One Horizon Centre, Golf Course Road. Every dish tasted great, everything was reasonably priced (way cheaper than the current market leader Gung), the portions were generous, the décor swank, and the service gracious.

We admins catch up for a meal normally once every quarter and this meal was long overdue. So we chose Hahn’s Kitchen based on their menu in zomato and Shivendu, Shefali and me landed up here at 1 pm sharp, early enough to get a private dining room all to ourselves.

There was no delay in the food coming and our Kimchi Jijigae (Rs 445) or Hot Pot with fried Kimchi, mushrooms, tofu, pork was served to us piping hot, and with portion size generous enough for three. In fact the hot pot and the accompanying side dishes which come free were enough for a light meal for three.

Pork Kimbap (Rs 545) or Korean sushi was served next and it was my kind of sushi with no mayo or any of the new age stuff. And pork works well in sushi. Saewoo (Rs 745) or grilled prawns were fresh, succulent and cooked just right, with a distinct smoky taste – a really enjoyable dish.

Charcoal Grill dishes were next with Gochujang (red chilly paste) marinated Samgypsal (Rs 745) or Pork Belly being served first. It was spicy and tasty, with firm pork belly pieces, very much like the Koreans like served with red chilly paste sauce.

One had to wrap these in salad leaves and have them like a kind of savoury pan, which was fun. It also came with a flavourful Miso soup and rice.

In the end we were served what I found to be the best dish of the meal - Mapo Tofu (Rs 695), which is a popular Chinese dish from Sichuan province, popular also in Korea. It consists of tofu set in a spicy sauce, made with minced pork meat. It is not easy to make a good Mapo Tofu because it is very difficult to get the right taste and textural balance. But the one served here is perfect and the portion size is huge. This is easily the best Mapo Tofu I have had in India.

Hahn Kitchen is a very fair place. Rice and a lot of side dishes are provided complimentary and so is the cut fruit dessert and Green tea at the end of the meal. This is quite a relief from the greedy Asian restaurants that charge the moon for boiled rice.

Having enjoyed the food, we request the serving staff to meet the owner of the restaurant, and we are soon joined by the charming and energetic Hyunkyung Cho. She accepts our compliments gracefully and tells us her focus is to make authentic Korean cuisine popular among Indians. To do that she is keeping the prices low and Hahn Kitchen is unique in having an expat Korean chef cooking authentic Korean food.

I would strongly recommend a meal at Hahn’s Kitchen, and when there do try the sushi, mapo tofu and prawns for sure. And their kimchi hot pot and whatever else catches your fancy. The food is all very good and reasonably priced.
