Varun Veigas is a young food entrepreneur who, after Al Karam and a partnership at Kaiser has now launched Nosh, an Indian restaurant with a difference at Supermart 1. Along with comfort mughlai food reminiscent of old Delhi, he does have some exotica in his arsenal. Shivendu and I are here on invitation from Varun for a tasting session.

As per Wikipedia, Kadaknath is an Indian breed of chicken local to the Madhya Pradesh area, where it is known as "Kali masi". The Kadaknath is popular mainly for its adaptability, and the good-tasting black meat, which is believed to infuse vigor.  The first dish we are served is Butter Garlic Roasted Kadaknath (Rs 1800), which has been roasted after being marinated in a blend of spices and finally topped with tons of garlic fried in butter. The dish is delicious and well worth its hefty price tag. It is essentially chicken that tastes like meat!

Rabbit Rolls (Rs 300) is the next dish served. Here Rabbit Meat has been tossed in a puree of Dates, Plum, Palm Sugar and Peanuts for crunch and then rolled in Roomali Rotis. Unfortunately the wonderful smoky taste of rabbit gets completely masked and lost with the additions.

Raan Mandi (Rs 2000), a flavoured Pilaf layered with Brown Rice, Nuts, Cranberries, Dates, Raisins, Mint, Coriander and grilled Raan is next. It is an interesting and colourful platter of big proportions. My Indian palate longs for Indian masalas here rather than the sweetish Middle Eastern flavours.

From the mughlai repertoire, we taste Mutton Burrah (Rs 350) and Mutton Nahari (Rs 380) both of whom are well made though need a bit more of cooking.

Sheermal (Rs 100), Garlic Naan (Rs 60) and Phirni (Rs 125) are competent.

So go ahead and treat yourself to Kadaknath chicken – the experience is worth the price. Since the exotic dishes are in the process of getting added, best to call first and confirm that they are available.
