Ever since I tasted Peruvian food a decade ago, it has mesmerized me. The food is delicious and seemingly simple to make, but delights in its complexity with its influences from the indigenous population including the Inca and cuisines brought in with immigrants from Europe, Asia and West Africa. So obviously I was very excited to find out that India’s first Peruvian restaurant has been opened by Michelin star chef Atul Kochhar at the tony BKC address.

As I enter, the restaurant décor is exciting. There’s a green ceiling, salmon pink walls, a bar and low-hanging lanterns, and an open feeling with its natural lighting. It seems to be designed to look like a South American restaurant and it succeeds in creating an exotic vibe.

I start with a most vibrant Kumquat Basil Caipirinha (Rs 600) that immediately puts me in the right mood.

For food, obviously the first dish I have to order is the iconic ceviche which I do immediately on being seated. Ceviche is a 2000 year old dish that originated in Peru, typically made from fresh raw fish cured in citrus juices, such as lemon or lime, and spiced with ají or chili peppers. Here, in Fish Ceviche (Rs 850), Indian sea bass is cured in lime and is served with avocado and red onion. It is a fantastic dish that is light, refreshing and amazes both with its taste and myriad textures.

Scallop Tiradito (Rs 1150) essentially cured scallops sashimi with a sauce made of chillies, and topped with cucumber ribbons making it vibrant and luxurious dish, well worth the hefty price tag.

Smoked Grill Yucca (Rs 350) is essentially tapioca with has been grilled and served. It is great by itself or as an accompaniment to the dishes, dispensing the need for any breads. The main course of Pork Chickarron (Rs 1000) or pork ribs is great with a generous fatty layer making it a juicy treat.

I would recommend coming here and indulging yourself in some of the treasures from a remarkable cuisine.
