While restaurants are mostly busy struggling to survive, there is a quiet revolution that seems to be happening in Gurgaon’s home delivery segment. Last week I discovered traditional Pho and this week it was some fine dishes from around the world. When “The Trial Box” got in touch for a tasting of their offerings, I said yes because of the variety and newness of the dishes, and the reasonableness of the prices. The food arrived promptly at the appointed hour in neat and impressive looking boxes.

The first dish I tried was Cilantro Lime Grilled Fish (Rs 350) which had a cilantro flavored grilled sole fish in lemon butter sauce which came separately. It was a pleasant dish but clearly not really suited to home delivery because grilled fish is best had fresh off the grill. The Lamb Shank (Rs 350), on the other hand was ideally suited for home delivery and came perfectly cooked with meat falling off the bone.

Spinach & Ricotta Ravioli (Rs 275) in a cheesy white sauce was next. It was comfort food at its best. What did not work at all was Bajra Flat Bread (Rs 230), agluten free vegetable pizza with Bajra base. The intention was good but the base tasted cardboard.

Simmond's Tuna & Chorizo Salad (Rs 375), a salad that a Michelin star chef has put together for The Trial box, with yellow fin tuna, grilled watermelons, pork chorizo in Japanese ponzu dressing (orange base) was an enjoyable salad, only I wish they had used a better quality chorizo – the one in the salad tasted like an ordinary industrial sausage.

Coming to the oriental side of the menu, Vietnamese Noodle Bowl (Rs 295), a healthy chicken bowl with an assortment of vegetables dressed in Vietnamese flavors was an enjoyable meal in itself. BanhMi Chicken (Rs 250), aVietnamese baguette sandwich with grilled chicken, pickled cucumber and greens in a spicy dressing was competent but could do with a better quality baguette.

Oriental Smart box (Rs 999) is basically a party oriental box for four people with three starters. It had hoisin chicken with mini pancakes, Cantonese fish and a couple of baos filled with lamb in cheng du spices. Each of the components of the box were expertly made and tasted good.

The Trial Box has a great combination of good food at good prices. If the quality is maintained to the level that they delivered to me, this enterprise could change the culinary landscape of Gurgaon and encourage more and more people to order in rather than go out for a meal.
