All of us have had a double egg double mutton kathi for a cheap, filling, quick meal, sometime or the other while in school or college, haven’t we? While I’m not a big fan of kathis anymore, but when I got an invite for a review of this new place called The Kathis, in Supermart 1, it brought back nostalgic memories of hanging out at Vasant Vihar or Saket, with the only decent, affordable stuff available to eat around being Kathis. The Kathis is a well-known chain in Delhi and have been serving Kathis and rumali rolls for the past almost 2 decades in Delhi. The branch in Supermart, opened a few weeks ago, is a delivery/take away joint, with a few chairs and tables set outside the joint.

The menu is very basic, with veg, chicken and mutton variety of Kathis and the same variety of Rumali Rolls. Apart from these, they have what they call a Kashmiri kathi, which have some additional seasonings and green chillis in them. They also have tawa tikkas (chunks sautéed on tawa) of paneer, chicken and mutton chunks.

I tried a few dishes and my review of them is below:

Tawa Chicken Tikka (Rs 130): Since they don’t use a tandoor, they sauté the chicken chunks along with onions and spices on the tawa and serve it as a starter. Unfortunately they were using boneless pieces of breast as well as thigh for this dish, so one had to choose the pieces. The thigh pieces were nice, but, as can be expected in Indian cooking, the breast pieces were fibrous and bland. I pointed it to the owner, and he expressed helplessness in the choice of cuts because all raw material apparently comes from the central kitchen, where the raw material for all franchises is procured. He, though, took the feedback and assured me he would talk to the person responsible for sourcing.

                            Tawa Chicken Tikka

Mixed Veg Kathi (Rs 90): This was a mish mash of potatoes, paneer, tomatoes and onions all sautéed on the tawa and wrapped in a parantha. For a veg kathi, this was pretty good. I surprisingly liked it.

                               Mixed Veg Kathi

Kashmiri Kathi Chicken (Rs 180) : this was a double egg double chicken variant, and I did not find anything extraordinary about the roll. Having said that, given that there was chicken in it, it was not disappointing, since I expected a one dimensional dish anyways. Of course, the chicken was again a mixture of breast and thigh pieces.

                          Kashmiri Kathi Chicken

Kashmiri Kathi Mutton (Rs 205) : This was again a double egg double mutton variant, with some spiced onions and chutney thrown in. This was juicy and delightful. The mutton was well cooked and amply spiced. I enjoyed it.

Rumali Roll Mutton (Rs 180) : For someone who doesn’t want to dilute the meat’s taste with egg and oil and parnatha, this is the dish. The mutton was the same as earlier, minus the extra paraphernalia of eggs and parantha. Liked this one too.

                              Rumali Roll Mutton

For a limited menu and there also being a limit on the style of dishes they can offer because of their name and the fact that they are only a franchise, it will be good to see if they can compete with a couple of similar genre joints in the same market, who have a larger menu. I wish them all the best!
