Mangalore region is a food heaven. Mangalore city for its carnivore delights and Udipi with its famous vegetarian cuisine together cater to every taste. My own favourites are chicken ghee roast, fish pullimunchi, pork vindaloo and the understated yet delicious Mangalorean fish curry. And not to forget the light and fluffy sannas.

Mangala Bar is a bit of an institution for anyone interested in Mangalorean Catholic cuisine. It is at its best when it comes to Pork, and that is precisely why I land up here every time I visit Mangalore. I can be sure I will get authentic Mangalorean non vegetarian food. For this meal I want to try some new things, dishes I have not tried so far.

What I find most fascinating especially in southern India is the pricing that still can go to paisa in the second decimal. Sannas (Rs 9.50 per piece) is my first choice before I order anything else, because no one else can make sanna as good as Mangala Bar can. Spicy Devilled Prawns (Rs 333) make for a great “chakhna”.

Sardine Salad (Rs 123) with fresh sardines is unlike any salad I have had, with the crunch of the small fish pairing beautifully with what is essentially kachumbar. Anjal (Surmai) Tawa Fry (Rs 400) is expertly fried and most enjoyable.

Rakthi (Pork Tripe) Sorpotel (Rs 90.40) is the highlight of my meal. It is simply superb, with the unctuous tripe contrasted with the tangy sorpotel sauce. For the mains, I choose the comforting combo of Neer Dosa (Rs 14.20) with some excellent Mangalore Fish Curry (Rs 42.80).
