For many of us childhood was the time we enjoyed the neighbourhood restaurant’s butter chicken and dal makhni the most. It would be ordered on rare occasions like good results or if a favourite uncle was visiting. And the taste was much more delicious compared to what most of today’s restaurants dish out. When I tasted the butter chicken from Foodies Gourmet Kitchen (FGK) first at the Gurgaon Foodie blind tasting, it reminded me of that forgotten childhood taste of butter chicken.

So when Hemant Kumar, the man behind FGK asked me for a review I gladly accepted. Fish Tikka (Rs 275) is flaky and robust in its spicing. Chicken 65 (Rs 255) is an ideal chakhna for the tipplers. What I notice with the starters and later with the mains is that the food is not necessarily the prettiest one around, but what it lacks in looks, it more than makes up in taste.

The Butter Chicken (Full at Rs 455) is tangy and creamy but not heavy, and it is delicious. Mutton Curry (Rs 335), though looking like an oil slick is sinfully tasty.

Dal Makhni (Rs 155) has a comforting taste to it. The only dish I do not really warm up to is Paneer Tikka Butter Masala (Rs 195) because it is gluggy and too heavy with its cream topped butter paneer. The accompanying rotis and nans are perfect too.

The food at FGK is generous and honest – and it is good and reasonably priced. Will order my BC and DM from here again.
