My first lesson from a disappointing dining experience at AnnaMaya, the much hyped coffee shop at Andaz hotel at Aerocity is this – I shall never go anywhere near a place that describes itself as “artisanal” and “organic” with “mindful” food – because more often than not it is likely to would mean a restaurant tasteless, boring and overpriced food. And that is precisely what happened with my lunch at AnnaMaya.

Essentially AnnaMaya is a 24/7 coffee shop cum organic food store rolled into one. The interiors are nice and airy with ample natural light and a relaxed vibe about it. Perhaps too relaxed because getting the attention of the serving staff was not easy.

I was here along with a vegetarian colleague and we decided to share an Amritsari Goat Milk Paneer Tikka (Rs 1120) which came with four chunky cubes of paneer. The tikka was ordinary to taste and the goat milk did not impact the taste in any remarkable way.

For the main course I chose Fresh Catch, Avocado, Caperberries and Cherry Tomato (Rs 1180) where I was told by the lady who took the order that the fresh catch was sea bass which is one of my favourite fish. My friend chose Baked Sweet Potato, Feta, Spinach, and Chilly Flakes (Rs 680).  Unfortunately the main course was disappointing too.

My dish turned out to be a disaster. The fish was not sea bass (the manager said later that it was salmon but then it was too white to be salmon) and it was overcooked way beyond redemption. The avocado was raw and unripe and rather bitter. So I had no option but to return the dish.

My friend graciously shared his sweet potato with me, which was….well….as good as boiled sweet potato can be.

The complimentary scoop of salted caramel ice-cream was pleasant but did not do much for the mood or the palate after the unfortunate meal experience.

Not sure I am coming back here anytime soon.
