I used to go to Malabar often till their quality started dipping. When many people vouched for the quality to have improved, Anshu and I decided to go there for Independence day lunch.

Whenever I go there I first ask if they have left over puttus from breakfast (they mostly say no but this time I am lucky) and if they are serving buff meat where I was told that since they were not really expecting customers today, the buff meat has just arrived, but they can rustle up some buff fry.

So for starters we go for Puttu (Rs 30) with its traditional companion Kadala Curry (Rs 30), Jewfish Fry (Rs 150) and of course Buffalo Fry (Rs 110). Puttu, though not shaped cylindrical and a bit on the hard side, nevertheless is good, especially when had with the delicious kadala.

Buff fry, though packed with some exciting masalas, is however too tough to enjoy. Jewfish fry is delicious and flaky.

For the mains we order the traditional Kerala Fish Curry (Rs 100) with Appam (Rs 10). Since the curry portion is tiny and also Anshu is finding the curry too sour, Anshu decides to order Malabar Special Chicken curry (Rs 150) which he loves.

I go for Mutton Stew (Rs 160) which has amazing curry but pieces of mutton that are too hard. The highlight of the meal is the amazing appams.

Yes, the quality here has improved, and yes it needs to improve much more. But many of their dishes are delightful.
