Meaning 'coconut tree' in Portuguese the close to 50 years’ old Coqueiro’s claims to fame are many – having made the first chicken cafreal in Goa, being one of the top choices for Goan Portuguese food in Goa, and last but not the least, being the place where Charles Shobhraj who, unable to resist the food, sat down to dine here, and was caught vindaloo handed here.

I am here also because it also falls right on the way to the airport (matters when I am in a hurry to catch my flight) and has service levels better than most Goan restaurants. I sit in the outer verandah, place my order and relax sipping my coconut feni. The order takes its time but finally arrives. First to come is Goan sausage chilly fry (Rs 280) with some good Goan pao (Rs 15). The sausage is toothsome because it tastes homemade.

The other starter, kingfish masala fry (Rs 500) which is what I get after ordering fish recheido is disappointing because it lacks the necessary crispness and is served lukewarm. Also the masala tends to overpower the fish.

The main course is prawn curry and rice (Rs 300) which is competent. I especially like the use of bhindi in the curry.

Is the food here the best in Goa? My answer would be no. I find mum’s kitchen and even the touristy Brittos and Martin’s corner better. But if like me you are coming from north Goa and are in a rush to catch a flight, this is the best option.
