Saurabh Khanijo, the owner of the Kylin chain believes so strongly that bowl meals are the future that he has dedicated a whole brand Shophouse by Kylin to serving bowls.

In this freezing winter, these meals are more welcome because now these bowl meals come in sizzling stone bowls that keep the food hot till the last morsel. And to make matters more spirited, one can now pair these bowls with mulled wine (Rs 545) which is warm wine infused with cinnamon, cloves, star anise honey and orange. It is good stuff because half way through my mulled wine, I had already taken my jacket off.

The way the bowls work is that one chooses the protein – there are four options of tofu, chicken, lamb and fish. Then there are three sauces to choose from -- chilly garlic sauce, black pepper sauce and hot basil sauce. Third is a decision on the carbohydrates where the options are any of the two types of rice or noodles. Then the restaurant fills these stone bowls with a combination of protein, vegetables (black and button mushroom, red and yellow pepper, water chestnut, and for vegetarians, edamame beans) and the chosen carbohydrates and sauce, for a light and flavourful meal.

I try two combos – hot stone fish bowl (Rs 695) in black pepper sauce, and hot stone veg bowl (Rs 495) in chilli garlic sauce and find both these combos pretty toothsome. Do try it especially on days when you are shivering too much in the brutal Gurgaon chill.
