For all foodies, life becomes an adventure, a search for food nirvana. I would define food nirvana as the moment where you taste something so good it overwhelms you and often brings tears to one’s eyes. Well, I had such an experience in Mangalore. I was at a meeting and asked the local gent to recommend some place for lunch. Go to Girimanjas, he said, and for God’s sake reach before 1230 pm.

After navigating a route that only a local can know, I reach Girimanjas at 1215 pm along with two colleagues. The eatery has three rooms and we are lucky to get a place in the second room. The seating was linear with the other side used for serving.

Everyone is focusing on eating meals – both unlimited veg meals with yellow dal and fish meals with fish curry are priced at Rs 50 each. Other fish dishes can be ordered a la carte and of course I order the lot.

The food nirvana moments start with the first dish, and stay with me till the last. The highest point of the meal is Bondas Fry (Squid; Rs 160). Squids here are fried precisely for the time that makes them oh so crisp on the outside and melt-in-mouth on the inside, with just the right amount of masalas. This dish has made it impossible for me ever to enjoy squid again because I would always compare.

Next in are Anjal Tawa (Surmai; Rs 200), Muru Tawa (Mackarel; Rs 130) and Prawn Tawa (Rs 190). Though they look similar, they all have a personality of their own and are all most enjoyable.

                       Muru Tawa                                              Prawns Tawa

The small Silver Fish Fry (Rs 100) arrives last and is toothsome. The rice along with the dishes is the thick Kerala rice, which gives a great texture to the curries. I wash this delicious meal down with a chilled Bonda Lime (Coconut water with lime; Rs 60). What a lovely meal!

For me, Girimanjas is a good enough reason to come back to Mangalore. A must try for those who do get there before me.
