I have always been skeptical about reviewing North Indian food for the simple reason that it’s difficult to find novelty in this kind of food. The food that every second joint in the city is serving, and many of them doing a good job. Some of the dishes that are being made in almost every household in the city, with varying degree of success. For these very reasons, when I was invited to review Tandoor Express, I wasn’t that excited. However, that worked for me because the food was better than my expectations. Tandoor Express is a delivery only joint behind Supermart 2 and I can say that they are doing a decent job. Some of the dishes that I tasted were:

Singhada Fish Fry (Rs 395): 5 chunky pieces of fish, in a delicious batter, but the crispiness was lost because of packing. Not a dish that travels well, but can work if you’re eating in a car.  Murgh Tikka (Rs 310): 8 pieces of well cooked, tender, juicy chicken pieces. Perfect for that drinks party during the festive season.

Murgh Malai Tikka (Rs 330): 8 pieces of creamy, juicy chicken thigh. This was almost melting in the mouth, and of course, you can’t go wrong with malai. Mutton Seekh (Rs 350): Decent, but not mind blowing. I like mine juicier, but apart from that I can’t complain much.

Dal Makhni (Rs 240): Honest home style dal makhni. Not ODing on cream, and the pulses have not been ground to death. It not being too rich gave it a very comforting taste. I can have it with jeera rice and convert it to a comfort meal. Butter Chicken (Boneless, Rs 275, 4 pieces): Surprisingly good! Again not ODing on cream, but lovely texture of the gravy, tender chicken pieces and left a lovely taste in the mouth.

Rara Gosht (Rs 280): 2 large pieces of mutton in a keema gravy, the mutton cooked well. However, I would like to order in anonymously once before giving it a good grade. The portion that was served to me was very good, but I’m generally skeptical to give mutton dishes a thumbs up during an invited review. You haven’t heard the last from me on this one yet.

Kadhai Chicken (Rs 250, 2 pieces): Avoidable, unless you are particularly fond of this specific dish. I’m not, and I’d avoid it in future as well.

In a nutshell, I found the food better than your average neighborhood tikka joint largely because of the fact that I did not come across a single under cooked, chewy piece in the entire meal, and also because none of the dishes were over loaded with oil/butter/cream and the masalas were consistently palatable across all dishes, except maybe the kadhai chicken. So the next time you go driving around the neighborhood, or are having that cards party at home, I recommend you try this place once.
