Thai Pavilion is running an interesting festival featuring many popular delicacies from the streets of Thailand with a special menu curated by the hotel’s Thai Chef, Prajuab Shoosridam. I am here at the invitation of the hotel to have a preview of dishes to be served. “A Thai Street Affair” is on at Thai Pavilion from July 14 to 23, 2017 at lunchtime.

We start the tasting session with koong meanam rad sos prik keang (Rs 1250) which has perfectly cooked crispy fried scampi tossed in home style curry, kaffir lime flavor. It is a dish that could make you experience some sort of food nirvana. Geang kua koong bai cha plu (Rs 950) or village style curry with prawn and betel leaf is a heady mix of known and unknown flavours, and again the prawns retain their succulence.
Tom som peh (Rs 850) or sour lamb soup has a great flavourful broth, but the tough lamb pieces somehow compromise the taste of the soup.

In the mains, Yam moo sannok yang (Rs 950) would probably taste much better if it used a fattier cut of pork rather than the loin. The vegetarian dishes fare much better. Sam grob boran thod (Rs 750) is a great vegetarian dish, with its myriad flavours and textures. It has spicy cashew nut, peanut, ginger and lemongrass.

Phad  phed phak prik thai (Rs 750) is an enjoyable and piquant dry vegetable curry, spiked with green peppercorns. Another interesting dish is (Rs 750) which has stir fried bitter gourd, shallots, vinegar, and Chinese cabbage making it an interesting Siamese interpretation of the Bangla classic dish shukto. The main course is served with a choice of jasmine rice or brown rice or spicy jasmine fried rice.
                           Mara Phad Phak Kad Preaw

We end the tasting session with the quintessential Tub Tim Grob (diced water chestnut with coconut milk) coupled with a chocolate soufflé (Rs 400 each).

The food at Thai Pavilion can be an epicurean adventure. The street food experience is no different.
