Honest, no-nonsense Food
Restaurant: Roti Boti

It was with not too much expectations that we ventured to the unexceptionally named Roti Boti restaurant at Supermart 1 on a Saturday afternoon. Unexceptionally simply because the cuisine (North Indian) has been done to death and the name, of course, does not lend any mystery to the joint.

Located in a quiet corner of Supermart 1, they are the usual 20-25 cover neighbourhood joint and they serve the usual Chicken centric food like butter chicken, chicken tikka, butter chicken, butter naan, etc. and maida laden rotis (I call it the Delhi cuisine). The kind of stuff that goes down the throat easily after a couple of beers on a hot Delhi afternoon.

Anyway, so determined not to order the butter chicken and butter naan, we sat down and asked for a bunch of kebabs, both non-veg and veg. The Mushroom ki Galauti and the Hara Bhara Kebab, both stood out, the former truly melting in the mouth and the latter a far cry from the average seekh shaped peas and potato stuff that is served at every nook and corner of the city, including birthday and wedding parties.

The Mutton Galauti, on the other hand, was a big let-down. If you are able to pick up a galauti with a fork, then there is definitely something wrong in the dish. It wasn’t melting in the mouth and was lacking the burst of flavours that is usually associated with a Galauti. Moving on to the tikkas, there was nothing spectacular in the Fish Tikka and the Malai Tikka and they seemed to have more or less the same marination.

However, the Zaffrani Murga Tikka was definitely worth a try. One thing that stood out in both the chicken tikkas was that the pieces were soft, tender and marinated well. One could cut a piece out of the tikka in one soft motion of the fork, if you know what I mean. The downside was that all three tikkas were a little too salty for our taste.

For main course, the Dal Makhni was well recommended by them and did not disappoint. You could make out that it had been cooked with patience. It could use a little more salt, but that’s not something that I would complain about. The Shahi Paneer was just about average.

The Chicken Biryani was, surprisingly, very good. The chicken was well cooked, soft and juicy, and the rice was not oily, yet was wet.

The star was the Roghan Gosht – the mutton well done, cooked in a brown, mouth-watering gravy. I really enjoyed the gravy.

We finished the meal with Gulab Jamuns, but they were rather too sweet for my taste.

For a name as average as Roti Boti and a cuisine which almost every second restaurant in Delhi NCR is doing, they are doing a decent job and it’s a place that I would recommend for times when you don’t feel like experimenting and are just going out for an honest, no nonsense meal. The Biryani and Roghan Gosht are my recommendations.
