I have been hearing rave reviews about Neung Roi for a long time from people whose opinion I trust. So when a college time friend called me inviting out to lunch, I did gently coax him to come to Neung Roi. The restaurant has dim lighting and comfortable interiors that do not scream Thailand, and the service is superb and discreet from the beginning to the end.
We are here for lunch and the first surprise for us is the excellent lunch packages the restaurant offers. We are not really looking forward to thousands on food, and are pleasantly surprised to see the lunch menu capturing some of the best dishes in their special lunch menu, priced simply at Rs 1000 for 2 courses, 1200 for 3 and 1400 for four courses. Delighted, we choose the three course menu (next time I will opt for the four course one) and the serve staff is ever so accommodating to even include jungle duck curry from outside the menu into it.
As we are seated we are served a drink that tastes like mirinda, but tastier, and what looks like a spicy savoury Thai paan. For the starters, I choose the much recommended by many members of Gurgaon Foodie facebook group – pomelo salad. It is tart, sweet, crisp, spicy, and savoury – a really addictive bite.

My fried chooses prawns on lemongrass skewer that are an expertly put together mince of subtly spiced and flavoured shrimp. Great starters.

For the main course I have chosen (again told by my Gurgaon foodie friends as a must have) Jungle duck curry with sticky rice. The curry is simply superb. It is thin, light, spicy and extremely flavourful and looks most Indian with the red film of oil on top. I thoroughly enjoy this dish and unashamedly lick it off the bowl.

My friend gets prawn pad thai with his steamed fish in lime chilly sauce. The pad thai is excellent, quite close to what one gets in the streets of Bangkok. My friend enjoys the steamed basa which is light and nice, though too healthy for me!

Dessert choice is the famous Tub Tim Krob, which translates to red rubies in coconut milk. It is a nice, cooling and refreshing dessert to end the meal.

Neung Roi is a must visit for any food lover. I for one, plan to go again and again, especially at lunch time. Many other dishes to be tasted.
