Toast & Tonic is co-owned by chef Manu Chandra of the Monkey Bar and The Fatty Bao fame. The colourful façade of Toast & Tonic is a counterpoint to the commercial glass and metal facade of the heart of Bandra Kurla Complex. The sign on the wall describes it as East Village-style restaurant and bar, which can be both confusing (east village? Ghatkopar village?), and somewhat pretentious (what does NY east village supposed to look like?). Till I quickly checkup the ever so helpful wikipedia and this is how it explains East Village style – “The neighborhood has become a center of the counterculture in New York, and is known as the birthplace and historical home of many artistic movements …. It has also been the site of protests and riots.”

The food here is diverse with ideas from all over the world but locally sourced. Some of it is rather tasty while some of the dishes are competent without being scintillating. Carne Assada Tostada (Rs 390) is a roast buff based dish with a complicated description but a somewhat characterless personality. Tuna Tataki (Rs 450) with mango, avocado and chilli salsa is a good appetizer.

The perfectly boiled egg is the hero in soft eggs and andouille sausage on sour dough bread (Rs 400) while the sausage is a not so close approximation to the Louisiana icon, missing the smoky taste.

Baby Back Ribs with tamarind jaggery glaze (Rs 450) is the highlight of the show. The ribs are perfectly yielding and can be eaten with a spoon. The glaze adds significantly to the taste. Tamarind, jaggery and pork combo works beautifully.

Toast and |Tonic is a cheerful place with a cheerful menu. Can be visited when at BKC.
