Some great dishes, some almost there

I like food from the valley, but apart from a meal at Chor Bizarre, I have not had wow moments with this cuisine. When Gurgaon Foodie Vivek Dhar requested for a review, I could not say no, because the group admins are here to support enterprise among the group, and besides I thought maybe this time I will have some wow moments.

Vivek came himself with the food a few minutes before time, and the packing of the food was smart, though they could use a bigger pack for the biryani.

I started my tasting with Kashmiri Rajma (Rs 260), flavoured with Kashmiri masalas, cumin powder, coriander powder, bay leaves and finished with desi ghee. This was an enjoyable dish with an enjoyable flavor.

Tabak Maaz (Rs 460) however was disappointing. The ribs were not as succulent as the ones served at Chor Bizarre or Khyen Chyen. The classic dish, Mutton Rista  (Rs 490) had delicious gravy but the sponginess in the meat balls was alas missing, compromising the texture of the dish.

Kashmiri Fish Curry (Rs 550) is nice, with deep fried Rohu fish cooked in red gravy with Kashmiri spices. Kashmiri Mutton Biryani (Rs 400) is enjoyable because it has a completely different flavor profile as compared to the usual Gurgaon biryanis, with a pleasant hit of fennel and other Kashmiri spices.

From their non-Kashmiri section, I try Bhuna Gosht (Rs 450) which to me is the tastiest mutton dish of the meal. It is well bhunoed, with some great flavours. The accompanying masala parantha (Rs 55) just enhances the taste.

Daawat e Kashmir shows promise. If they can improve the quality of their mutton and its preparations, it can indeed be a robust option for Kashmiri food. I wish Vivek Dhar and his team the best of luck.

Please note: This review was done on an invitation from Daawat e Kashmir to taste their food, and when the food was sent to the author’s home, no bill was presented to the author. While the author assures you of objectivity, the review may be influenced by the extra care and attention the food samples got before being sent for review.
